Getting to know Gwendolyn Hooks

My dad was in the Air Force and my family moved whenever he was transfered to a new base. I lived in Georgia, Texas, Washington, and Italy. I still love to travel. I've visited Canada, England, Belgium, Bahamas, and Mexico. I'm always ready for another trip.

These trips are not just fun times. I'm constantly thinking about ideas for new books. You never know when an idea will jump out. Some of my ideas come from my three grown-up kids, my husband, or our pet cat.

I love writing for children and you can always find me working on one project or another.

In The Works

Lexie McNair: Bubble Gum Detective, a chapter book about third-grader Lexie who chews bubble gum to help her solve mysteries in her neighborhood.

Bass Reeves, Deputy US Marshal: Disguised!, a picture book biography about one of the first African American marshals west of the Mississippi River. Bass was famous for disguising himself to capture outlaws.

Just Finished!

I wrote three science books for Rourke Publishing for 2008 publication. Ask me anything about food webs.

I can't claim to be an expert, but after weeks of researching, I can tell you who eats who all the way up the watery food chain.

Look for Food Webs in the Ocean, Food Webs in Fresh Water, and Food Webs in the Arctic - coming to a bookstore near you.
